Nyungwe National Park is Rwanda’s national park in the southwestern region of Rwanda in the Butare district. This park covers about 1019 square kilometres and is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. Nyungwe National Park was put in place in 2004, and it is home to several wildlife species and numerous attractions. This park shelters over 310 bird species and various animal species. Apart from the wildlife, this park also has several hiking trails, namely the Rukuzi trail, the Muzimu trail, the Ngabwe trail, the Congo Nile divide trail, the Bigugu trail, and the Isumo waterfall trail, among others. Montane forests, bamboo trees, wetlands, and grasslands largely dominate Nyungwe National Park.

Nyungwe National Park is famous for its chimpanzee trek and canopy walk; however, it also offers other activities such as nature walks and bird watching. Day 1: Pick up from Kigali airport and transfer to Nyungwe National Park

On the 3 days of Nyungwe chimps and canopy, you will be picked up on day 1 from Kigali airport once you arrive by a representative guide from Chopper Tour and Travel. You will interact and get to know each other. After going through the itinerary, you will then set off for a tour in Kigali, where you will visit the Rwanda Art Museum. At this Museum, you will be able to see several art pieces by Rwandese artists designed in a way that portrays the history, culture and traditions of the people of Rwanda. You will tour around with a tour guide and then after you will be transferred to Kigali genocide memorial

At Kigali genocide memorial, you will have the opportunity to learn about the 1994 Rwanda genocide that took place in Rwanda. This memorial ground was put in place in respect of those that engaged in the genocide. You will learn about the events of the 1994 genocide while viewing the remains of Rwandans who lost their lives during this tragic event. A guide will then take you to a hotel in Kigali and you will have lunch

Once you are done with lunch, you will set off from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park. In the evening, you will arrive at Nyungwe National Park, where you can choose a lodge to stay in based on your preference for luxury, budget, or midrange accommodations. You will check in and then freshen up. You will have dinner at the lodge and then you will later retire to bed for your night rest.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

On the 3 days of Nyungwe chimps and canopy, you will rise from your bed early in the morning on day 2 and have breakfast. The guide will pick you up from the lodge after breakfast and take you to the park headquarters to be briefed by the park wardens about chimpanzee trekking. The park wardens will inform you of how to conduct yourself while chimpanzee trekking, and then you will have an armed ranger guide accompany you for safety purposes and guidance.

You will trek in the forest with an armed ranger guide to find the chimpanzees, and it will take you about 30 minutes to 4 hours, depending on their location. You will come across other primates and wildlife species as you search for chimpanzees in the forest. After several hours of searching, you will have only one hour with the chimpanzees after finding them. You will capture moments of them in their natural habitats as you observe how they play, feed, and more. The guide will then transfer you back to the lodge and you will be given lunch.

After lunch, the guide will pick you up from the lodge and take you to the park headquarters for a briefing. After receiving a briefing on the dos and don’ts of a canopy walk, you will embark on a canopy walk. You will then conduct the canopy walk on a 160-meter-long and 70-meter-high bridge, taking you approximately 2 hours to finish it. From the bridge, you will see attractions in Nyungwe National Park, such as the Nyungwe forest and various wildlife species, including animals and birds. The guide will return you to the lodge, where you can relax before having dinner. You will then go to bed for your night rest after dinner.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali airport

On the 3 days of Nyungwe chimps and canopy, you will have breakfast in the morning at the lodge on the last day of the safari and then the guide will pick you up from the lodge after you are done checking out. You will then be transferred back to Kigali Airport with a stopover at Kimironko Market, where you will buy souvenirs and have a brief conversation with the locals that work at this market. You will then continue to Kigali airport for a flight.
