This is a 6 days safari to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda where you will meet the mountain gorillas and golden monkeys that are sheltered there, get to see the tomb of Dian Fossey, the famous American primatologist and also have a coffee tour at Lake Kivu at one of its islands known as Nyamirundi island. You will learn about the coffee-making process while at Nyamirundi Island and also engage in swimming at Lake Kivu. The swimming will be an optional activity, but it’s safe since the lake is free from bilharzia and animals that may cause harm, like the crocodiles and the hippopotamus

Detailed Itinerary For The 6 Days Gorillas, Dian Fossey And Kivu

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali airport to Volcanoes National Park

On day 1 of the safari, you and a representative guide from Chopper Tour and Travel will meet at Kigali Airport, where you will exchange greetings and details of the safari. After that, you will start the journey to Volcanoes National Park with first having a visit to the Kigali genocide memorial that is found in Kigali. You will get to know about what took place during the 1994 Rwanda genocide and the significance of the Kigali genocide memorial. After the visit, you will have lunch at one of the hotels in Kigali and then head to Volcanoes National Park.

You will arrive at Volcanoes National Park and check into a lodge, have dinner and head to bed for your night’s rest.

Day 2 Gorilla trekking

On day 2 of the safari, after having breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing, and then you will embark on gorilla trekking in the forest. You may spend 30 minutes to 7 hours as you search for these gorillas. Once you find them, you will spend one hour with the gorillas in their natural habitat. You will have a lot of experience and also get to capture moments. After finding out several things about the m, ike how they feed, play, and many more, you will be returned to the lodge.

You will have lunch at the lodge, relax and later in the evening have dinner before you go to bed.

Day 3: Hike to Dian Fossey

On day 3 of the safari, after having breakfast, you will go with the guide to the park headquarters for a briefing. They will brief you about the hike to Dian Fossey, and you will also rent your hiking sticks from there. You will start the hike with an armed ranger guide as you will have several encounters with primates, bird species and many more. You will be able to see the Tomb of Dian Fossey when you get there, and you will also learn from the guides about the research that was made on the mountain gorillas and many more. You will then get back to the lodge and have lunch.

After having lunch, the rest of the day will be spent at the lodge while relaxing and then in the evening, you will have dinner and retire to bed.

Day 4: Golden monkey trekking and transfer to Lake Kivu

On day 4 of the safari, after having an early morning breakfast at the lodge, you will be taken to the park headquarters for a briefing, and then you will go to the forest with an armed ranger guide for golden monkey trekking. Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park may take several hours due to the location of the golden monkeys, but once you spot them, you will stay with them for one hour. The one hour will be availed to you to observe their behaviours and to also capture pictures and videos. You will then be taken back to the lodge for relaxation, lunch, and then you check out.

The guide will then transfer you to Lake Kivu, where you will get a lodge where you will spend the night, and it’s at the same lodge that you will be served dinner.

Day 5: Visiting coffee plantations

On day 5 of the safari, you will have breakfast very early in the morning while on a Rwanda safari, and then the guide will take you for a boat ride that will lead you to Nyamirundi Island. You will visit the coffee plantations of this island and get to know more about how coffee is processed from the locals that you will meet there. After visiting the coffee plantations, you will be returned to the lodge, and you will have your lunch.

After lunch, you will have an optional swim at Lake Kivu since its water is clear and free from wild animals like hippos and crocodiles. In the evening, you will have dinner and then retire to bed.

Day 6: Depart for Kigali Airport

On day 6 of the safari, you will have breakfast and, after checking out of the lodge, the guide will transfer you back to Kigali with a stopover at Kimironko market, where you will purchase souvenirs and also meet the locals in the market. After the market visit, the guide will take you to Kigali Airport for your flight.
