Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Located in the serene waters of Lake Victoria, approximately 23 kilometers southeast of Entebbe, Uganda, Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary stands as a testament to conservation, compassion, and community engagement. Forest trail/walk
During the forest trail, visitors are able to view and learn about other animals and plants found in the forest, and during the walk, the visitors have direct contact with the juvenile Chimpanzees who are allowed to walk with the visitors in the forest since they young chimps behave like the humans since they are playful, love playing hide and seek and these juveniles like teasing and seeking for attention and on the walk, you will have an opportunity to view other animals like the monitor lizards, otters, fish eagles, spiders, and the fruit bats.
Fishing
Is one of the wonderful activities that one can participate in on Lake Victoria and the main edible fish species got there are the Nile perch and Tilapia this activity can be arranged according to the programs of the visitor and during the experience, a tourist is able to view and explore Lake Victoria and the skippers who know the best places to catch the largest fish and the tourists are advised to come with their fishing equipment or get them in the sanctuary.
Birdwatching
With over 150 bird species, including a resident fruiting tree at Ngamba Island, birds of forest or water associations (eg African fish eagles, turacos, hornbills, African paradise flycatchers, and weavers that build nests in reed beds), tourists are able to photograph these magnificent birds from lakeshore hides. Other avian species include the Nile Monitor lizard and the spotted-necked otter. The island’s jungle environment provides a natural haven for bird watching and wildlife viewing.

Caregiver for the day experience
This experience is available for visitors who decide to spend the night or more in the island. The experience is designed to give visitors an opportunity to understand what the caregivers go through to make the chimps happy and in good health. Chimps in Ngamba Island to be eligible, one has to be ready to undergo extensive medical tests and clearance. Participants are involved in all aspects of chimpanzee care including preparing food and feeding them.
While on the caregiver for the day experience, you are also involved in the cleaning of the chimp sleeping chambers, during the performance of medical tests, in research and overall monitoring of individual chimps. The experience not only allows visitors to experience what it is like to take care of chimps but also helps raise funds for the sanctuary.
Getting There
Reaching Ngamba Island is an adventure in itself. Visitors can embark on a 45-50 minute speedboat ride from Nakiwogo Dock in Entebbe, offering scenic views of Lake Victoria. For a more traditional experience, motorized canoes are available, taking approximately 90 minutes. Alternatively, air travel options are available, with flights from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip taking about 20 minutes.
